Key Considerations

  • Local knowledge of Newman specific challenges and opportunities.
  • Numerous servicing constraints and limited as-constructed information requiring effective liaison with Water Corporation, BHP Power and the Shire of East Pilbara.
  • Amendments associated with changing market conditions requiring the investigation of servicing and staging strategies.

Project Challenges

As Constructed & Design Capacity Records

As documentation and technical information for existing infrastructure was scarce, in depth planning and analysis was required by JDSi, in consultation with relevant service authorities, to ensure accurate locations of existing services were known prior to completing design work.

Water Corporation Liaison

Due to the presence of existing sewer pressure mains and major water distribution lines, the development areas were restricted. JDSi was required to effectively and closely liaise with Water Corporation and this enabled the infrastructure to be redesigned to facilitate their removal and realignment, opening up the development area

Power Authority Relationships

BHPBIO-SA are responsible for the distribution of electricity within Newman, through this project and many others within the town. JDSi has established a strong working relationship with the key stakeholders within BHPB. We were able to draw on these relationships to ensure the electrical reticulation outcomes for this development were cost effective and practical.

Drainage

Existing flood routes through Newman are becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. JDSi has detailed in-house information on flood mitigation, including previous flood studies, planning and design information across the town, as well as anecdotal information which has been combined to provide a holistic approach to managing and maintaining flood routes both upstream and downstream of the development.

Servicing and Staging Strategies

Due to changing market conditions and servicing constraints, JDSi investigated a number staging options and strategies for the development. Our extensive in-house rates for north west projects combined with detailed construction knowledge has enabled us to provide development options to ensure a flexible and cost effective outcome.
